Modern Retreat in a Rural Hamlet
This home is part of a co-housing community in rural Virginia and is located on a steeply sloping site with distant mountain views. The house is a modern interpretation of the traditional white clapboard farmhouse and red barn that populate the neighboring countryside. The use of white clapboard siding, standing seam metal room, and metal siding on the house and the board and batten red siding on the out building share a common language with the rural context. The narrowness of the plan affords cross ventilation, supplemented by a ventilation system built into the cupola, while its super insulated building enclosure and geothermal system provide a highly energy efficient residence. A large screen porch on the gable end provides an outdoor room that is has unobstructed views of the mountains beyond. On the interior careful design of the millwork affords specialized storage and multi-functional use of the space.
