Royal Oak Renovation
This project renovates and expands a 1914 Dutch Gambrel home in Royal Oak, Maryland, and converts an existing garage/barn into a pool house. Previous alterations, including a one-story north addition and a wraparound deck, were removed or reworked to create a more historically sympathetic design and to reorient the property toward Oak Creek and the pool on the south side.
A new two-story addition on the private north side introduces a first-floor primary suite with a sitting room above, connected by a curved stair. The main entry was relocated to the west elevation, aligning with the long tree-lined drive, and the kitchen was renovated to better serve a large extended family. The former deck was replaced with a wraparound porch, including a screened section facing the pool, while the east (waterside) façade was restored to a more traditional, symmetrical composition with a renewed porch and new antique heart pine floors and period-appropriate details.
The original barn, previously converted to a garage, was transformed into a pool house. The first floor now includes a great room and changing room, with a new stair leading to a second-floor game room and open deck overlooking the pool. Together, the house and pool house face Oak Creek and form a cohesive family retreat designed for large gatherings.
