Hawk's Nest
Hawk’s Nest is a home and studio for a Parisian sculptor, set within an abandoned limestone quarry overlooking the Potomac River. The design uses two simple cast concrete volumes rising from the rock to frame the landscape and support a steel-and-glass structure above. A grid of slender steel columns and expanses of glazing create a sequence of framed views and blur the boundary between interior and exterior, while naturally weathering Ipe introduces warmth, privacy screens, balconies, and bridges that touch the site lightly.
Inside, the narrow plan encourages natural cross ventilation, and dark concrete floors with radiant heat provide comfort and a robust working surface. Primary colors animate an otherwise black-and-white palette, reinforcing the feel of an atelier. The residence and studios are crafted to be both of the place and a refined backdrop for the artist’s ceramic and metal work, heightening her connection to the surrounding landscape.
