Modern Retreat in a Rural Hamlet
This home, part of a co-housing community in rural Virginia, sits on a steeply sloping site with expansive mountain views. Its design is a modern interpretation of the traditional white clapboard farmhouse and red barn, using white clapboard siding, standing seam metal roofing, metal siding, and a red board-and-batten outbuilding to echo the surrounding rural architecture.
The narrow floor plan promotes natural cross ventilation, enhanced by a cupola-integrated ventilation system, while a super-insulated building envelope and geothermal system create a highly energy-efficient residence. A large screened porch on the gable end functions as an outdoor room with unobstructed views of the distant mountains. Inside, carefully detailed millwork provides specialized storage and supports flexible, multi-functional use of the interior spaces.
