Westmoreland Hills Renovation
This project is a historic renovation and addition to a 1930s center-hall Colonial home in a leafy Maryland neighborhood near the DC line. While the new owners loved the home’s character, its original layout—three bedrooms, two baths, a partially finished basement, and an unused attic—no longer met the needs of their growing family.
The design goal was to preserve the historic character while significantly expanding the footprint and improving functionality, especially toward the parkland at the rear. The front dining room, living room, and library were carefully restored. By relocating the main stair to the side, the traditional center-hall organization was maintained, creating a seamless transition between old and new.
The rear addition provides a generous kitchen, breakfast room, and family room, as well as a reconstructed screened porch. Above, a new primary suite with a porch captures views to the park. The basement and attic were fully reimagined: the new basement area houses a recreation room and gym with direct yard access, while the original basement now includes a laundry room, project room, and guest suite. The attic was converted into an additional guest bedroom and a south-facing office.
Overall, the project respects the historic fabric of the house while transforming it into a modern, flexible home tailored to contemporary family life.
