This project involves the historic renovation and modest expansion of a 1910 foursquare home in Chevy Chase Heights, Washington, DC. While the house retained its original exterior shingles and generous front porch, the interior required significant structural repair and restoration. The challenge was to substantially increase living space while preserving the historic character of the home.
The renovated design maintains the classic four-square organization, with an entry foyer leading to the existing main stair and restored original windows. Periodappropriate interior detailing and custom-milled natural oak trim were incorporated to match the home’s early-20th-century craftsmanship.
Exterior changes were intentionally minimal: a small breakfast room addition and new roof dormers are the only visible expansions. However, two additional living levels were gained by finishing the formerly unused attic and excavating the crawlspace to create a new lower level. The new spaces include a fifth bedroom, bath, mudroom, and recreation room.
The exterior shingles and trim were fully restored, and new French doors connect the home to an east-facing terrace and side yard, enhancing indoor–outdoor flow. The result is a seamless, respectful addition paired with a comprehensive interior renovation that preserves the home’s historic character while providing modern comfort and functionality.
