A House in the Woods

Located on a unique 11-acre site in Fairfax, Virginia, protected by an extensive conservation easement, this new home for a growing young family is sited near the high point of the property, where a clearing affords views of the surrounding woodland and stream.

The material palette celebrates a strong contrast between black siding and cream-colored masonry while evoking the simple forms of a traditional farmhouse. Natural fir heavy-timber elements provide a warm counterpoint, further connecting the home to its natural setting.

One of the project’s primary challenges was bringing light into the home while preserving its northern orientation toward the woods. A large, glass-enclosed central stair creates a striking focal point upon arrival at the drive court. This stair floods the home with natural light, while the main living spaces are oriented toward the views and bathed in daylight.

The second floor contains three bedrooms, an office, and a laundry room, all connected by a hall overlooking the stair. The openness of the stair also brings light down to the lower level, which includes a playroom, exercise room, guest suite, and a “man cave” that proudly displays the owner’s passion for hunting. All five bedrooms enjoy views of the forest.

Although the home’s craftsmanship and traditional form reference an earlier time, it is very much a modern, energy-efficient residence designed to accommodate the client’s growing family for years to come.
