Highland Farm
Highland Farm in Charles Town, West Virginia, is a 270acre property of rolling fields and wooded land along the Shenandoah River. Once slated for major subdivision development, the property was instead preserved and transformed into a unified farm estate. The early-20th-century Georgian main house was fully restored, while two tenant houses and several deteriorated agrarian outbuildings were reconstructed to create a cohesive compound.
The garage was rebuilt and paired with a new dining terrace connecting it to the main house. The stone foundations of the original bank barn were salvaged to frame a pergola and garden south of the residence. A new tractor barn echoes the historic form of the bank barn and incorporates locally sourced stone. At the top of the hill along the farm road, a guest cottage was added to overlook the sweeping fields and enjoy unobstructed sunset views.
The result is a thoughtfully restored and expanded estate that preserves the character of the historic farm while celebrating its remarkable landscape.
