Penthouse with a Feature Stair
This Bethesda penthouse originally suffered from a long, narrow layout where a dark, enclosed stair blocked views and natural light. The living area had also been subdivided to create a third bedroom, further diminishing the openness of the space.
The renovation replaces the enclosed stair with an open glass staircase that visually and physically connects the entry hall to the main living area. Converting the former third bedroom into a dining space creates an open plan linking the kitchen, living room, and dining area, allowing light from the large windows to flow through the entire apartment and brighten the entry. A Venetian plaster feature wall anchors the new stair, while integrated LED lighting illuminates each glass tread. The stair leads to an upper-level office and a roof terrace designed for entertaining, complete with an outdoor fireplace and weatherproof TV.
Custom built-in furniture in anigre and walnut echoes the building’s angular geometry. New lighting—carefully integrated into the ceilings and controlled by a home automation system—brightens the interior and highlights the clients’ art collection.
The transformation turns a once dark, constricted layout into a bright, open home with sweeping views of the city skyline.
