Penthouse with a View
This modern Chevy Chase condominium renovation transforms a formerly compartmentalized flat into an open, contemporary home designed around its extraordinary 270-degree skyline views and continuous terrace. The redesign navigates fixed building constraints—plumbing shafts, structural columns, and irregular geometry—while creating an elegant space suited for entertaining, displaying a diverse art collection, and supporting aging in place.
A curved hallway gracefully conceals fixed building elements and leads to the private rooms. Hidden doors, gallery-style LED lighting, and a modern oakpaneled library maximize functionality and display space. EcoSmart fireplaces, a retractable TV positioned at a central column, and English brown oak cabinetry contribute to a warm, sophisticated palette. Walnut flooring extends seamlessly outdoors to the Ipe-clad terrace, where a serpentine planter shapes the exterior rooms.
The high-gloss lacquer kitchen features lava stone counters, a retractable breakfast table, hidden butler’s pantry, and supplemental catering space. Pocket doors allow the kitchen to be open for casual living or closed for formal entertaining.
The primary suite includes custom cabinetry, a private balcony, dual closets, and a spa-like bath with a curbless steam shower, frameless glass water closet, raised soaking tub, and a curved-wall vanity with a backlit mirror and retractable dressing table. Two guest bedrooms—one serving as an artist’s studio—share an accessible frameless-glass shower with separate toilet and sink areas.
A strong collaborative team—including H. Gray Builders, Vivian Braunohler Design Associates, Jennifer Gilmer Kitchens & Baths, and Hartranft Lighting Design—helped shape this highly customized, contemporary residence.
