High Gate

This house, set on a hill at the end of the Red Barn Lane, was inspired by England’s so called “long Houses” of the 18th and 19th century. Those narrow, linear structures often featured a cross passage to the barn; in this home a recess with bracketed columns that match those of the front porch creates a link to the garage. The two-story stucco home enjoys a greater seclusion than the other homes at Highgate, with a stepped plan that allows three sides to have views of the pond. Like many of the homes in Highgate, it incorporates strong gables with steeply sloped roofs, casement windows with expressed wood lintels above, and a modest entry punctuated by low stone walls.  On the rear a three-sided screen porch leads to private terraces, facing the pond and the woodland that borders the community.
